certificate valid for life in 186 countries worldwide
This isn’t a “fast course at the expense of quality.” It’s the standard international PADI program, simply taught intensively — without unnecessary rest days between dives. That’s why the 3-day PADI course has become the industry standard.
About the Course
OWD is the entry-level international certification. It gives you the right to descend up to 18 meters anywhere in the world, rent equipment, and continue training in advanced courses.
The course takes 3 days and includes theory, pool or shallow-water practice, and 4 open-water sessions. By the end of day three, you receive a plastic certification card that never expires and is recognized in 186 countries.
This isn’t just vacation entertainment. It’s a lifelong skill that unlocks the underwater worlds of the Maldives, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia — anywhere there’s an ocean and a dive center.
Location
Nha Trang is one of the best places in Vietnam to earn your first certification. Here’s why:
🌡️
Warm Water Year-Round
25–30°C — comfortable training without a wetsuit. No need to fight the cold, focus stays on skills.
🏝️
Calm Training Areas
Hon Mun and Hon Tam islands — wind-protected lagoons with minimal current. Perfect for beginners.
👁️
Great Visibility
In season (March–September) — up to 20 meters. You see your instructor, the reef, your hands — not swimming through milk.
🐠
Living Coral Reefs
Training on real reefs with fish — never boring. Every dive feels like an adventure.
🎯
Small Class Sizes
Maximum 4 students per instructor. Personal attention to every student, focus on your progress.
💰
Fair Pricing
The Open Water course in Nha Trang is cheaper than in the Maldives or Egypt, with the same training quality.
Program
Intensive but clear program. Each day brings new skills that build on each other. By the end of day three, you’re descending independently.
| Day | Program | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Theory (underwater physics, safety, equipment). Practice in the pool or shallow water: gear assembly, breathing underwater, mask clearing, regulator removal and replacement. | You understand how scuba gear works and feel comfortable breathing underwater |
| Day 2 | Heading out to sea. First descent at 6–8 meters: practicing skills (buoyancy, pressure equalization). Second descent at 10–12 meters: compass navigation, air monitoring, hand-signal communication. | You swim underwater confidently and control your depth |
| Day 3 | Two final descents at 12–18 meters: independent gear setup, dive planning, emergency procedures. Written exam (75% pass rate). Certificate ceremony. | You receive your OWD certification |
Certification
All three systems certify you to descend up to 18 meters worldwide. The differences are in the details:
| System | Features | Popularity |
|---|---|---|
| PADI Open Water | The most popular system in the world. Standardized program, recognized brand. Accepted everywhere. Textbooks and materials slightly more expensive. | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| SSI Open Water | Digital learning materials (app, online platform). Flexible training approach. Slightly cheaper than PADI. Rapidly growing in popularity. | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| CMAS 1★ | The oldest international certification organization (founded in 1959 by Jacques Cousteau). Classic European school: foundational theory of underwater physics and physiology, strict safety standards. Unites federations from 100+ countries. Especially popular in Europe among those who appreciate an academic approach. | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
If in doubt — go with PADI. It’s the most recognized system, your certificate will be accepted at any dive center worldwide without question. If price matters or you prefer digital materials — SSI is a great choice. If you want a more academic approach with deeper theory — CMAS.

Safety
Is this an extreme sport? No. It’s a controlled activity with clear rules. When standards are followed — it’s safer than riding a scooter in Nha Trang.
✅ How We Ensure Safety
📋 Your Responsibility
Statistics: This is safer than soccer, horseback riding, or skiing. According to DAN (Divers Alert Network), there are fewer than 5 serious incidents per million descents. And almost all of them are due to rule violations.
Preparation
The Open Water course requires no special preparation. But a few things make training more comfortable:
1️⃣ Complete the Theory in Advance
PADI eLearning or SSI Digital lets you complete the theory portion at home. Saves 3–4 hours during the course. Costs $140–160, but worth it — more time in the water.
2️⃣ Practice in a Pool (If Possible)
If you have access to a pool — practice breath-holding, diving to the bottom, ear equalization. Not required, but psychologically easier.
3️⃣ Get a Good Night’s Sleep Before Day One
The course is intensive. Fatigue makes it harder to absorb information and concentrate underwater. First night in Nha Trang — go to bed early.
4️⃣ Don’t Drink Alcohol the Night Before
Going underwater hungover is a bad idea. Dehydration increases the risk of decompression sickness. On day 1 and day 2 — no alcohol in the evenings.
5️⃣ Book Your Course in Advance
In high season (March–September), spots fill up fast. Better to book 1–2 weeks before arrival to guarantee convenient dates.
Format
Some dive centers offer to stretch Open Water across 4–5 days. Here’s why we believe 3 days is ideal:
✅ Benefits of the 3-Day Format
📊 Statistics
95% of our students successfully complete the course in 3 days. 87% say the format was comfortable — not too fast, not too slow. That’s why “PADI 3-day course Nha Trang” is one of the most popular searches among tourists planning to learn diving in Vietnam. |

FAQ
▶ Do I need underwater experience for OWD?
No. OWD is the entry-level course for beginners. You start from zero. The only thing recommended is being able to stay afloat in water.
▶ Do I need to know how to swim?
PADI/SSI standards require swimming 200m any style or 300m with mask/fins. This isn’t an Olympic standard — just basic comfort in water. If you have doubts — message us in advance, we’ll help you prepare.
▶ Can I complete the course faster than 3 days?
Yes, if you complete the theory in advance via eLearning. Then day 1 is shorter, and the course can fit into 2.5 days. But there’s no need to rush — quality matters more than speed.
▶ Is instruction in English?
Yes, fully. Theory, briefings, underwater signals, debrief — all in English. This is critical for safety understanding.
▶ Is breathing underwater scary the first time?
For most people — yes, the first 5–10 minutes feel unusual. Your brain resists: “How can I breathe underwater?!” But the instructor is right there, you’re in shallow water, everything’s under control. By the end of day one it feels natural.
▶ How many people in a group?
Maximum 4 students per instructor. This ensures personal attention and safety.
▶ What if I don’t pass the exam?
The exam requires 75% correct answers. If you don’t pass on the first try — retake the next day at no additional cost. The instructor will review your mistakes, and you’ll try again. Less than 5% of students don’t pass.
▶ Do I need my own equipment?
No, everything is provided: tank, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, wetsuit, dive computer. Just bring a swimsuit and towel.
▶ Can I dive with glasses or contact lenses?
With contact lenses — yes. We can also provide a mask with prescription lenses. Regular glasses don’t fit under a mask — let us know in advance.
▶ Are there medical contraindications?
Yes. Asthma, epilepsy, recent surgeries, heart or lung problems require a doctor’s clearance. Before the course, you fill out a medical questionnaire. If you answer “yes” to any question — you’ll need a doctor’s consultation.
▶ Can pregnant women dive?
No. Going underwater is prohibited during pregnancy at any stage — risk to the fetus. This is a strict rule of all certification organizations.
▶ When is the best season for training in Nha Trang?
March–September — best visibility, calm sea. But courses run year-round. Water stays warm even in winter (25°C), there might just be slightly more waves.
▶ Is transfer included?
Yes, free transfer from your hotel within Nha Trang is included in the price.
▶ What if the weather turns bad?
Sessions are rescheduled to another day. Safety beats schedule.
▶ Is the certificate valid worldwide?
Yes. PADI, SSI, and CMAS are recognized in 186 countries. Get certified in Nha Trang — go underwater in the Maldives, Egypt, Thailand — anywhere.
▶ Does the certificate need to be renewed?
No. The OWD certificate is valid for life. Earn it once — keep it forever. But if you haven’t been underwater for over a year — a refresher (Scuba Review) is recommended.
▶ Can I dive solo right after the course?
No. You always go underwater using the buddy system, meaning with a partner. Solo descents are only allowed with a Solo Diver certification.
▶ What’s after Open Water? Which course is next?
The next logical step is Advanced Open Water (depth up to 30m, 5 sessions, 2 days). You can also take specialties: Nitrox, Deep, Wreck, Underwater Navigation.
▶ Can I do Open Water and Advanced back to back?
Yes. Many students do Open Water (3 days) + Advanced (2 days) = 5 days of full training. This is a popular vacation format.
▶ Are there group discounts?
Yes, special rates apply for groups of 3 or more. Ask when booking.
