About the Course

What Is Advanced Open Water and Why You Need It After Open Water

You earned your Open Water — congratulations, you’re a certified diver! But OWD only covers the basics: up to 18 meters, daylight, calm water. Most of the interesting stuff begins beyond that threshold.

Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) is the next logical step. The program extends your range to 30 meters depth, teaches compass navigation, lets you try specialties (night descents, wrecks, perfect buoyancy), and turns you into a confident diver instead of a beginner who’s afraid to leave the instructor’s side.

The format is simple: 2 days, 5 dives, international certification. No exams like Open Water — only practical sessions underwater. By the end of day two you’ll descend to 30 meters, navigate by compass, and realize that going deeper is exciting, not scary.

💡 When to Take Advanced?

You can start right after Open Water — no extra experience required. Many students do Open Water (3 days) + Advanced (2 days) = 5 days of full training in one trip. This is a popular format for those who want to become a confident diver right away.

Depth

What Changes Beyond 18 Meters (and Why It Matters)

Most divers don’t expect just how different the underwater world becomes past the 18-meter threshold. It’s not just “a bit deeper” — it’s different physics, different psychology, a different sport.

🌊 Light Changes
At 25–30 meters, light turns blue and fades. Red disappears first — blood looks green. Without a flashlight everything resembles dusk. Space feels denser, silence deeper. It’s beautiful but unfamiliar.
💨 Nitrogen Behaves Differently
At depth, nitrogen dissolves in your blood faster. A mild euphoria appears (nitrogen narcosis) — some feel it like a slight buzz. Safe but requires control. Advanced teaches you to recognize symptoms and respond properly.
⏱️ Time Shrinks
At 30 meters you have ~20 minutes of bottom time (vs 40–50 at 10–12 meters). Air is consumed faster due to pressure. You need to plan more strictly — Advanced teaches this hands-on.
🎯 This Is Where Real Diving Begins

Open Water is the foundation. Advanced Open Water is where you understand the physics of going underwater, instead of just “doing what the instructor said.” You plan the descent yourself. Control depth and time. Navigate without help. You become a diver, not a tourist underwater.

Location

Why Take Advanced in Nha Trang (and Not Somewhere Else)

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s main scuba region. Water is warm year-round, visibility is solid (10–20m in season), and the seabed lets you safely reach 30 meters without sharp drop-offs or dangerous currents.

🌡️
Water 26–30°C
No cold-water stress. Stay underwater longer — progress faster. No energy wasted fighting the cold.
🪸
Varied Terrain
Coral gardens, rock walls, sandy plateaus. Each session on a different bottom type. Excellent for skill development.
🧭
Gentle Slope
Gradual descent to 30m — ideal for first deep sessions. No sharp drops like on ocean walls.
🚤
Convenient Logistics
Short boat ride (30–50 minutes), medical services nearby, proven infrastructure. Safe and comfortable.

PADI Advanced or CMAS 2★ — Which to Choose

Both certifications are recognized worldwide and grant access to 30 meters. The difference is in approach, pace, and teaching philosophy.

Parameter PADI Advanced CMAS 2★
Depth 30 meters 30 meters
Duration 2 days 3–4 days
Sessions 5 adventure dives Extended program
Theory Minimal, focus on practice Deep theory block
Best For Travelers Serious students
💡 Our Recommendation:

If you have only a week in Nha Trang and want to level up fast — choose PADI Advanced (2 days). If you have time and want deep theoretical knowledge — go with CMAS 2★ (3–4 days). Both certifications are equally recognized worldwide.

Program

How the 2 Days of Advanced Open Water Unfold

Each session begins with a detailed briefing and ends with a debrief. No “conveyor belt” — you progress at your own pace, the instructor is always with you. 5 sessions, 2 days, international certification.

Day Sessions and Skills
Day 1 Morning: Theory block (30–40 minutes) — deep dive planning, nitrogen loading, safety.
Dive #1 — Deep Dive (mandatory): Gradual descent to 25–30 meters. Equalization practice, time control, observing changes in light and color. Bottom time planning.
Dive #2 — Underwater Navigation (mandatory): Square and triangle compass patterns, navigation by natural landmarks, returning to start point without GPS.
Day 2 Dive #3 — Specialty of your choice (Peak Performance Buoyancy / Night / Drift / Wreck)
Dive #4 — Specialty of your choice (from available list)
Dive #5 — Specialty of your choice (final descent)
Wrap-up: Final debrief, Advanced Open Water Diver certificate ceremony
💡 Important:

Two sessions are mandatory (deep and navigation) — that’s a PADI requirement. The other three you pick yourself from available specialties. We’ll match them to your interests and goals.

Specialties

5 Specialties to Choose From — What to Try

After the mandatory deep and navigation sessions, you choose three more specialties. Each is a separate adventure session with new skills.

🎯 Peak Performance Buoyancy (PPB)
Perfect buoyancy — “hovering” in the water column without movement. Breath control, proper weighting, air conservation. The most popular specialty — afterwards you swim twice as confidently.
🌙 Night Diving
Descent after sunset. Flashlight in hand, absolute silence, bioluminescence in the water. Fish sleep, night hunters appear. Incredible experience — but not for everyone (some find it scary).
🚢 Wreck Diver
Descent on a sunken ship (Nha Trang has several accessible wrecks). Safe external inspection, photos through portholes. Entry/exit techniques, navigating around obstacles.
🌊 Drift Diving
Descent in current — you fly along the reef like paragliding. Minimum effort, maximum views. Entry/exit technique, signaling the boat, safety in flow. Available in season (March–September).
📸 Underwater Photography
Underwater photo basics: composition, light, working with a camera below the surface. How to shoot fish, corals, macro. You’ll need your own camera or housing (we can rent one).
🐠 Fish Identification
Learn to identify species of fish and marine life. Clownfish, barracudas, rays, moray eels — you’ll know who’s who. Useful for understanding the reef ecosystem.

Choosing Sessions

Which 3 Specialties to Pick on Advanced (Recommendations)

After the mandatory deep and navigation sessions, you have 3 free slots. Here’s what we recommend depending on your goals:

🎯 For Beginners After Open Water
1.PPB (Peak Performance Buoyancy) — fixes all OWD mistakes
2.Fish ID — learn to recognize who’s who underwater
3.Underwater Photo — start shooting beautifully
⚡ For Adrenaline Seekers
1.Night Dive — descent into the dark with a flashlight
2.Wreck — sunken ships
3.Drift — flying along the reef in current
📊 The Universal Combo (90% of Students)
1.PPB — mandatory for everyone (the most useful session)
2.Wreck — interesting and great for photos
3.Night Dive — an unforgettable experience
💡 Instructor’s Tip:

If in doubt — pick PPB no matter what. It’s the only specialty that truly transforms your underwater experience forever. After PPB you use half the air, don’t stir up sediment, and hold position perfectly for photos. Other specialties are interesting experiences. PPB is a fundamental skill.

Physiology

Nitrogen Loading and Bottom Time — What You Need to Know

On Open Water, you went to 18 meters and didn’t really worry about time — 40–50 minutes underwater was standard. At 30 meters everything changes. Advanced teaches you to plan with nitrogen and pressure in mind.

Depth Bottom Time Air Consumption
10–12m (OWD) ~140 minutes x2 vs surface
18m (OWD limit) ~56 minutes x2.8 vs surface
25m (AOWD) ~29 minutes x3.5 vs surface
30m (AOWD limit) ~20 minutes x4 vs surface
📊 What This Means in Practice:

At 30 meters you have approximately 20 minutes of bottom time (no decompression stop required). Air is consumed 4 times faster than at surface. Advanced teaches planning: when to start ascent, how to control air supply, how much time to leave for safety. It’s not difficult — just requires attention and discipline.

Reviews

Real Stories from Our Advanced Students

“After Open Water I was scared of depth — thought 18 meters was my limit. On Advanced I dropped to 28 meters for the first time and realized: it’s calmer down there than at 10! Now I scuba everywhere — Egypt, Thailand. Advanced changed my whole attitude.”

— Alexey, 35, Engineer from Moscow

“Did OWD and Advanced back-to-back — 5 days in Nha Trang. Best decision! After Open Water I felt like a beginner. After Advanced — already a real diver. PPB taught me to hover, navigation taught me to find my way. Don’t postpone.”

— Maria, 29, Marketer from St. Petersburg

“The night session on Advanced was incredible! Scary at first to drop into the dark, but the instructor stays close. Switched on the flashlight underwater — and it’s more beautiful than during the day. Bioluminescence, night fish. Loved it!”

— Igor, 42, Entrepreneur from Yekaterinburg

Minimum number of logged sessions
Special physical training
Advanced English (we keep instructions clear and simple)

Motivation

Why Not to Postpone Advanced “for Later”

Many divers finish Open Water and think: “OK, I’ll do Advanced sometime later, when I gain experience.” That’s a mistake. Here’s why Advanced is best done right away:

📈 Faster Progress with an Instructor
If you swim solo — you reinforce Open Water mistakes (poor buoyancy, extra movement, inefficient breathing). Advanced corrects this under instructor supervision. The earlier — the better.
🌍 Access to the Best Sites
Most interesting spots require Advanced: wrecks at 25–30m, reef walls, drift sessions. With Open Water you simply won’t be allowed in — operators check certifications.
💰 Cheaper in Nha Trang Than Anywhere Else
Advanced in Egypt or the Maldives costs $450–550. In Nha Trang — cheaper, with the same conditions (warm water, good visibility, professional instructors). Save $100–200.
💡 Statistics:

According to our data, divers who completed Advanced within the first year after Open Water dive 3 times more often and visit 4 times more destinations than those who postpone. Simply because they have more access to interesting places and more confidence underwater.

FAQ

20+ Questions About Advanced Open Water

▶ Can I take Advanced right after Open Water?
Yes, that’s standard practice. No additional experience required — you just need a valid Open Water Diver certificate (PADI, SSI or CMAS). Many students do Open Water + Advanced back-to-back over 5 days in one trip.
▶ Do I need good physical fitness for Advanced?
Basic health and ability to swim are enough. If you completed Open Water — you’re physically ready for Advanced. A medical questionnaire is filled out before the course. Physical strength is not the deciding factor — technique and breathing control matter more.
▶ Is it dangerous to dive to 30 meters?
When PADI standards and instructor supervision are followed — 30 meters is an absolutely safe depth. We monitor nitrogen loading, ascent rate, and air supply for every student. The risk is no higher than at 12 meters — it just requires more attention to planning.
▶ Which specialties to choose from the 5 sessions?
Two are mandatory: deep (30m) and navigation. The other three are your choice. The most popular combo: PPB (perfect buoyancy) + Wreck + Night. But we’ll match them to your interests when you book.
▶ Is instruction in English?
Yes, fully. All training, briefings, and course materials are in English. PADI and CMAS instructors deliver everything clearly so non-native speakers can follow along easily.
▶ PADI Advanced or CMAS 2★ — which is better?
Both certifications are recognized worldwide and grant access to 30 meters. PADI Advanced — 2 days, minimum theory, focus on practice (ideal for travelers). CMAS 2★ — 3–4 days, deep theoretical foundation (for serious students). We’ll help you choose based on your goals when you book.
▶ When is the best season for training in Nha Trang?
Diving is possible year-round — water stays 26–30°C even in winter. Optimal season with maximum visibility — March–September (15–20 meters). October–February also works, just slightly less visibility (10–15m).
▶ Are there exams on Advanced?
No written exams like Open Water. Advanced is all practice. Each session is evaluated by the instructor in the water, but it’s not stressful — just observation of your progress. The non-pass rate is less than 2%.
▶ Do I need my own gear?
No, everything is provided: tank, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, wetsuit, dive computer, compass. If you have your own — you can use it (especially relevant for mask and computer).
▶ How many people in a group?
Maximum 4 students per instructor. Usually 2–3 people. This ensures personal attention and safety at depth.
▶ Can I just do the deep dive without the whole course?
Yes, you can do an Adventure Deep Dive (one session to 30m) without earning the Advanced certificate. But this won’t give you full skills — better to take the whole course, it’s only 2 days and far more valuable.
▶ What is nitrogen narcosis and is it dangerous?
Nitrogen narcosis is a mild euphoria at depth caused by nitrogen dissolving in your blood. Feels like a slight buzz, slowed reactions. Not dangerous if controlled. Advanced teaches you to recognize symptoms and respond properly (ascend a couple of meters — and it goes away).
▶ How much air is consumed at 30 meters?
At 30 meters, air is consumed 4 times faster than on the surface (4 atmospheres of pressure). This means ~20 minutes of bottom time vs 40–50 at 10–12 meters. Advanced teaches you how to plan air supply and monitor your gauge.
▶ Can I dive to 40 meters right after Advanced?
No. Advanced Open Water grants access to 30 meters. For depths beyond 30m you need a Deep Diver course (up to 40m) or TecRec (technical diving). But for 99% of dive sites worldwide, 30 meters is more than enough.
▶ Is hotel transfer included?
Yes, free transfer from hotels within Nha Trang is included in the course price.
▶ Are there couple or group discounts?
Yes, special rates apply for couples and groups of 3+. Also if you do Open Water + Advanced back-to-back — combo discount. Ask when booking.
▶ Is the Advanced certificate recognized worldwide?
Yes. PADI Advanced Open Water and CMAS 2★ are recognized in 186 countries. Earn it in Nha Trang — you can scuba in the Maldives, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia — anywhere.
▶ What if the weather turns bad?
Sessions are rescheduled to another day at no extra cost. Safety beats schedule. In season (March–September) reschedules are rare — the sea is usually calm.
▶ Can I take Advanced on Nitrox (enriched air)?
Nitrox is a separate specialty. You can take a Nitrox course in parallel with Advanced or after it. Nitrox gives you more bottom time at depth, but requires extra training.
▶ How do I sign up for the Advanced course?
Message us on WhatsApp or call — we’ll pick convenient dates, match specialties to your interests, and answer all questions. In high season (March–September) it’s better to book 5–7 days ahead.
