Requirements

What You Need to Sign Up for Rescue Diver

Rescue Diver is an advanced course for experienced divers. Before starting, make sure you meet PADI’s requirements:

📋 Mandatory Requirements
Age: minimum 12 years (Junior Rescue) or 15 years (adult Rescue Diver)
Certification: PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent from another agency (SSI, CMAS, etc.)
EFR certification: Emergency First Response (CPR and first aid) no older than 24 months — this is a mandatory PADI requirement
Medical questionnaire: filled out before the course begins. If you have chronic conditions, a doctor’s clearance may be required
❓ What if I don’t have EFR?

Without an Emergency First Response certificate, you cannot start the Rescue Diver course — this is a strict PADI requirement for all students.

The solution: We run the EFR course in 1 day (theory + CPR and first-aid practice). You can take it the day before Rescue Diver starts, or combine both courses in a single trip:

EFR + Rescue Diver Package:
• Day 1: Emergency First Response
• Days 2–5: Rescue Diver course
• Total: 5 days, two certifications
💪 Physical Preparation

The course requires physical effort — you’ll need to tow a “victim” diver, lift them to the surface, perform in-water rescue breathing. You don’t need to be an athlete, but baseline fitness matters. Good news: the instructor adapts exercises to your fitness level, and team support helps you get through even the toughest scenarios.

Practice

Real Scenarios You’ll Practice

Rescue Diver isn’t classroom theory. 70% of the course takes place in the water, where you repeatedly drill real rescue operations. Here are examples of scenarios you’ll go through:

🌊 Scenario 1: Panicking Diver at 15 Meters

Situation: Your buddy starts panicking at depth — breathing fast, grabbing you, trying to bolt to the surface.

Your actions: Approach from behind/side, establish eye contact, slow the diver’s breathing by your own example, control their buoyancy, slowly escort them to the surface with safety stops. On the surface — calm them, assess their condition, decide whether to end the dive.

💨 Scenario 2: Unconscious Diver on the Bottom at 20 Meters

Situation: You find an unconscious diver lying on the bottom. Regulator in mouth. Not breathing.

Your actions: Check for response, replace the regulator if it has fallen out, inflate their BCD, control your own buoyancy, begin a controlled ascent at 9 meters per minute. At 5 meters depth — start rescue breathing every 5 seconds while continuing the ascent. On the surface — signal the boat, tow to the side, remove from the water, begin CPR, prepare oxygen.

🔍 Scenario 3: Missing Diver

Situation: The group returns to the boat, but one diver is missing. Last seen 15 minutes ago near the reef at 12 meters depth.

Your actions: Quick situation assessment with the captain, identification of the last contact point, organize a search team (2–3 divers), choose a search pattern (circular or U-shaped), descend with a search line, systematic grid search, communicate with the surface via SMB. If found — assess condition and apply the appropriate rescue procedure.

😓 Scenario 4: Tired Diver on the Surface Far from the Boat

Situation: A diver surfaced 200 meters from the boat, the current is carrying them further, they’re tired and starting to panic, choking on waves.

Your actions: Deploy SMB to signal the boat, drop the victim’s weight belt for maximum buoyancy, calm them with your voice, let them hold onto your BCD or use a tow technique, slowly move toward the boat or shore, constantly monitor their condition and breathing. If they lose consciousness — switch to the unconscious-diver rescue protocol.

⚠️ Important note about realism

All scenarios run in controlled conditions but are as close to reality as possible. The “victims” are your fellow students who play their roles very convincingly. The instructor is always nearby but doesn’t intervene if you’re handling it. You have to learn to act as if it’s a real emergency — because one day it might be.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About the Rescue Diver Course

▶ What are the requirements to enroll in Rescue Diver?
Age 12+ (Junior) or 15+ (adult). Hold a PADI Advanced Open Water certificate or equivalent. Emergency First Response certificate (CPR/first aid) no older than 24 months — this is mandatory.
▶ How many dives are in the course?
6–8 dives covering scenarios from shallow water down to 30 meters. Each dive focuses on different aspects of the rescue operation.
▶ Is the course physically demanding?
Yes, the course requires physical effort: you’ll need to tow a “victim,” lift them to the surface, perform rescue breathing. But the instructor adapts the tasks to your fitness level. Team support helps you get through.
▶ What if I don’t have an EFR certificate?
Without EFR, you can’t start Rescue Diver — that’s a PADI requirement. But we run the Emergency First Response course in 1 day. You can take it before Rescue starts or combine both courses in a single trip.
▶ Can non-divers join?
No. Rescue Diver is an advanced course for certified divers. The minimum requirement is Advanced Open Water.
▶ Why is Rescue Diver considered the most important course?
Because it changes your attitude toward diving. You stop thinking only about yourself and start seeing the “big picture” — your buddies’ condition, potential risks, the action plan in case of an emergency. This makes you not just a safer diver, but a more aware person overall.
▶ Is instruction in English?
Yes, fully. Theory, briefings, underwater signals, debriefs of every scenario — all in clear English. This is critically important for a course at this level, where every detail matters.
▶ Do I need my own gear?
No, all rescue and dive gear is provided. Just bring personal items — your own mask (if you have one), swimsuit, towel.
▶ How many people in a group?
Maximum 4 students per instructor. This ensures personal attention and safety while drilling complex scenarios.
▶ What if I can’t handle a task?
The instructor will repeat the exercise as many times as needed. The course isn’t about speed — it’s about quality. All students go through moments of doubt, and that’s normal. The key thing is not to give up.
▶ Can Rescue skills be used in real life?
Yes, and it’s already happened. Many Rescue Diver graduates tell stories of how their skills saved a life in a real situation — from helping a panicked buddy to a full-scale rescue operation. We hope you never have to use them, but if you do — you’ll be ready.
▶ Is it scary?
Some scenarios — yes, intense. But it’s a controlled environment. The instructor is right there the whole time, the “victim” is your fellow student playing a role. You make your mistakes here so you don’t make them where it really matters.
▶ Can I take Rescue right after Advanced?
Yes, if you have EFR. Many students combine Advanced (2 days) + Rescue (3–4 days) into one trip. In a week you go from 18 to 30 meters depth and acquire rescuer skills.
▶ What comes after Rescue Diver?
If you want to keep going — the next step is Divemaster (the professional level). Rescue Diver is a mandatory requirement for all PADI professional programs.
▶ Can I take a break between course days?
It’s better to do it consecutively — that way the skills accumulate naturally. But if you need a rest day between Day 2 and Day 3, that can be arranged with the instructor.
▶ When is the best season for Rescue in Nha Trang?
March–September — best visibility and calm seas. But the course runs year-round. In low season (December–February) conditions are slightly more challenging, but there are fewer people and more instructor attention.
▶ Is transfer included?
Yes, free transfer from your hotel within Nha Trang is included in the price.
▶ Is the certificate valid worldwide?
Yes, PADI Rescue Diver is recognized in 186 countries and valid for life. This certificate opens the path to PADI professional levels anywhere in the world.
▶ Can I do the online theory in advance?
Yes, PADI eLearning lets you complete all the theory before arriving in Nha Trang. That way you spend less time on land and more time in the water.
▶ Is there a written exam?
Yes, at the end of the course you take a final exam on theory and demonstrate practical skills. The instructor prepares you so the exam is just a formality.
▶ How do I sign up for the course?
